Scent Description: Made with Benzoin, Frankincense, Clove, and Nutmeg essential oils. This soap smells like an older gentleman’s pantaloons at the end of a hot July day in Philadelphia, drafting important documents with no air conditioner. It’s actually a very unique scent that reminded a few of my testers of a root beer float. An instant favorite.

NOTE: The description is tongue-in-cheek.  It smells like a wonderful blend of Frankincense, Benzoin, Nutmeg, and Clove.  It doesn't actually smell like sweaty old man pants. As of 3 March 2015, we have been averaging about 2-3 inquiries per week as to why we would make a soap that smells like an older gentleman's trousers......

Ingredients: Beef Tallow, RSPO (Sustainable) Palm Oil, Coconut Oil, Distilled Water, Olive Oil, Castor Oil, Sodium Hydroxide, Essential Oil, Sodium Lactate

Bar Size: 5.5oz

Storage: Please store unopened soaps in a location that is cool, clean, and dry. This will help them last longer. Once a bar is in use, store it in a dish with slats, wire rack, or any soap dish prevents water from pooling underneath the soap. There are no chemical hardeners in the soap, nor are they milled soaps. Leaving them sitting in water will cause them to turn soft and greatly reduce the overall life of the soap.

Bath soap with distinctive frankincense, clove, and spice scent that divides opinion. Customers praised "excellent lather and moisturizing properties" and clean feeling without residue. While some loved the "old-fashioned" and "medicinal" aroma, others found it too heavy. Performance is consistently strong, leaving skin soft.

Frankincense and Clove

Not my favorite. I love frankincense, but the clove and especially the benzoin are pretty heavy.

Definitely agree with other comments calling it an old fashioned scent. Not bad, but not my style

Old Man Scent

I was so pleased with my first batch of Stirling soaps I bought (really love Arkadia, Duchess and Sound of Sunshine). Ben Franklin was the only one in the bunch that didn't do it for me. It's a very antique smell, which I usually like. Not this time - perhaps it's the frankincense - something really assaults the nose. When washing with it, actually smells vaguely of urine? Of course like all Stirling products, it's a soap that leaves skin feeling great.

I'm a lifetime Stirling fan and not trying to throw shade. Everyone's nose is different.

Medicinal

I don't know what any of those oils smell like and I don't know why anyone else reading this would either. To me it smells medicinal, something in use prior to the 70s. I can't place it, but I'm sure that description would have been a lot more effective than old man's pants. And nothing at all like a root beer float. I like old timey medicinal smells, so this is a winner for me. It reminds me of when this country stood for freedom and everyone wasn't so comfortable they made up things to whine about.

Does actually kind of smell like an old man

at the very least it's not a sweaty old man

Love the cloves - Fantastic scent

I love this product. I have been searching for a good "cloves" scented soap for years. This is it for me. I love the perfect combination of the scents in this soap. It is now in my top 2 of Stirling scents (along with Satsuma). Please keep Ben Franklin in the full lineup (shave soap, bath soap, shampoo bar, aftershave) for a long time, since it is a very hard scent to find anywhere. Stirling has a corner on this one.

A Caricature of an Old Man, Without Going Over the Top

The scent is wonderful. I really enjoy how forward the frankincense comes through. The clove and nutmeg are perfectly complementary. It may be a touch heavy for the warmer months. The shower stall and bathroom are left smelling wonderful.

Excellent

Very pleasant, warm, soft scent. I think most people would like it. Somewhat akin to root beer.
Soap is really good too.

Perfect Timely Scent

I really love the smell of my wifes frankincense essential oils so i figured Id give the Ben Franklin bath soap a try. I really really enjoy it. Its scent is spot on. My wife says I smell like grandpa but it is truly a great timley scent. The frankincense and clove scents are the most prominent. The shave soap, bath soap, and aftershave all smell exactly the same and my bathroom smells amazing. Great soap!

Dad and it's baby boy.

So I have owned this soap for over a month or two now, honestly I've lost track. I bought the 4.5 refill puck and threw it into a mug. Ive rotated it about 4 times now and I gotta say, it's a great soap. The root beer slightly shines through and I love the frankincense, which I feel is the dominant scent here like a dad and it's like the root beer is a little baby boy in dads arms. You notice the dad more than the baby. I know that's a weird way to put it, but that's the best way I can describe it. And as always, this is a top notch performer in all aspects, glide, cushion, post feel, and latherability.

Never knew bath soap could smell this good. Now I have to reorder the shave soap for the full experience!

Very fragrant

The scent was definitely interesting. I read the reviews before I tried it. After use, it leaves a nice aroma in the bathroom all day. I did get a hint of root beer. Solid but not my favorite. Like other Stirling bath soaps, performance was very solid and reliable. It did not leave me dry.

Not My Favorite, but...

I received a sample of this with my order and knew nothing about it before using it. For me, the scent seemed odd and even a little off-putting--I can't pick out any spice notes. That being said, it lathered well and left my sensative skin feeling clean and soft without any irritation. Based on its performance and price, I'd be willing to try another Stirling bath soap, but in a different scent.

My favorite of all

I really enjoy this scent. Definitely the best Frankincense compared to any others I have tried. Such a nice clean feeling after using this in the shower. Some soaps from other makers left my children's and my skin feeling like it had some residue left behind on our skin, some other soaps from other soap makers dried our skin like crazy. Stirling is the best, leaves your skin feeling clean and fresh, the way it should be. My kids and my favorite soaps of all.
Awesome scent
Nice lather
Super clean

Doesnt' quite work for me

Like all the Stirling bath soaps this has excellent lather and moisturizing properties and is a top notch soap. That said, the scent is a little odd and is not something I'll use again. Somehow, the description of old men in leather breeches in July does seem apt....

Great way to start the day

I love the hint of root beer and it leaves you with a clean feeling without the residue.

Great scent!

Love the scent, cloves, spices, and the sort. Like a root beer float with a lot of spices/clove. It reminds of a older time that's for sure.

Great quality soap...odd scent.

So like all Stirling Soap products, the Ben Franklin bath soap performed great. I just didn't care for this scent and that is the only reason I took a star off. To put that in perspective, it is the first Stirling scent I haven't enjoyed. But I'm not going to take off more than one star for something so subjective. It has a sharp tee tree oil type scent to me with some earthy/leather type undertones. Unique...just not my cup o' tea.

Wonderful scent!

I want my own pair of old man pantaloons! I bought this scent despite the odd description and I love it! I had been looking for a soap with Frankincense for a long time. I found it with this. It is a delightful smell and not at all heavy. (I haven't found any scents to be overkill) It is also a good scent for man or woman.

Excellent, surprisingly pleasant scent--way better than I expected!

This one was a pleasant surprise. I always avoided it because it's described as smelling like root beer and I thought who would want to smell like root beer? However, I received a free sample of the bath soap in my latest Stirling order so I tried it out. When you open it, it does have a moderately sweet smell reminiscent of root beer but there's also a nice, earthy, Old Spicey undertone to it, and it's that undertone that really comes out when I lathered it up in the shower and it is really unique and quite quite nice. I will definitely buy a full size bath bar and a shaving puck with my next Stirling order. So if you're on the fence about this scent, at least try a sample. I think you will be pleasantly surprised as well.
